Interesting article on the mobile phone war.

Meet the new Google Maps. Looks like a great map program that customizes its points based off of your selections. As an educator I hope we don’t loose our ability to make custom maps for Language Arts and History projects. One of our favorite activities is to create literature trips using maps to show the events in stories or historical locations. While we can always go back to Google Earth for this, it is not a option for Chromebook users.

The new Google Maps has not been launched at this time. We shall see what other options we will have with this update.

Google Sky on my Chromebook? Yes!

Want some of the features of Google Earth on your Chromebook? With Google Sky this is now possible.

One of the hardships with using a chromebook is it’s inability install and run programs. So no Google Earth :( Hold on, using Google Maps and Google Sky these features are now available in the cloud. Google Sky uses Google Maps to provide users the ability to look up and beyond. With links to Google Moon and Google Mars users can take virtual visits and see some great content.

For some reason search in Google Sky is not working, but indexed images from the Hubble Telescope, Constellations and other content layers are available. Google Moon and Mars allow search.

How long until we see Street view added to Moon and Mars??

Forget your phone? No problem with Google Hangouts

So it am sitting at Starbucks at CWRU this morning while my son is at rehearsal and realized that I need to call my parents before I stopped out at their place. I reach in my pocket and ….no phone. No Problem. Using Starbucks Wifi and the new phone feature in Google Hangouts I was able to call my mom from my PC for free!

Just go to Google + and create an open hangout. Select the invite button and use add telephone link. In no time I had my mom in the call and we made our plans for that afternoon. Call quality was outstanding and easy to use.
